Last night our team got a call about a snared hyena in the area. Probably
attacked by a leopard. We gathered our things and went to look for her, but
unfortunately we could not find her. Poor hyena. I hope she is just somewhere
licking her wounds and not being eaten by other carnivores around.
We also hit a bird during our search and because he was still alive, we had to
end his misery by chopping off his head. Pretty brutal. So as you can tell, it
was a very long and a fairly intense day for us.
Today was much better. We went for a discovery walk to look for hyena dens. We
found at least 20! Most of them were inactive, but hyenas often return to their
den sites months, sometimes even years later, so good data was collected.
Feeling very accomplished!
As I’m typing this post, the thunder outside is getting louder and louder. It’s
been pouring down for the past couple of hours. Wet season came early? Gosh,
it’s like I’m back in Melbourne!! Please make it stop!!!
